ArmaFlor®

Fibre Roll / Coir Log

Utility
Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs are roller-shaped construction and bioengineering elements used for various bank stabilization techniques along lake shores, on streams and in coastal salt marshes. They are strong, yet flexible and easy to use. Their modular design aids in cost effective shipping and installation. Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs typically are meant to be planted. As plants mature their root-mass replaces the gradual loss of the biologically degrading Fibre filling. The resulting embankments are secure and indistinguishable from natural embankments. Plants must be selected according to site specific environmental conditions.Streams, lakes and salt marshes require different plants. Plant roots filter fines from the water column. They also securely anchor Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs to the substrate. Unplanted Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs are used as breakwater structures.
Upon request with pre-drilled plant-holes available

Quality
Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs have been inspected prior to delivery assuring our customers that stringent material and quality requirements have been met. Upon request with qualitiy certifcate according EN 10204

The filling
Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs are made of tough natural coir Fibres (coir = processed coconut husk Fibres), tightly stuffed into netting. BGS Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs are stuffed to a density of approx. 6-10 kg/m (low or high density type) or 7-9 pounds per cubic foot. At that density Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs can no longer be compressed, unless they were exposed to hydraulic pressure. An average person standing on a Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs should hardly make a dent. It is the high density filling which marks the quality of all Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs. The high density is important for the lifetime of the product and for the filter-effect, which is one of the main reason to use a Fibre Roll/Coir Log. The low density type is for low mechanical strength upon request available.

The netting
The filling is encased by an envir- onmentally inert PP netting. PP is resistant to damage by light, frost and chemicals. Our special netting has been woven in one piece. It's a special knotless, rombic mesh type for high mechanical applications. Our netting is strong enough to allow Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs to be handled by hooks attached to power equipment. For projects where no synthetic netting is allowed or where the lifetime of the product is of no interest, we also supply nets made of natural coir Fibres. Natural netting lifetime is limited to approx. 12-18 months after installation!

Installation
As indicated in the margins various Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs applications may require different installation procedures. Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs are typically installed with the aid of wooden stakes. Size of stakes: approx. 1m long, diameter approx. 6-8cm, US-standard: 36-58 inches long, diameter: approx. 2,5-3 inches. Stakes should be spaced no further than approx. 75-80cm / 24 inches apart. Other then stakes, we have used earth anchors or rip-rap stone to hold Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs in place. Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs should be tightly connected to one another. Apply ample pressure to fit bud ends together as tightly as possible. Manually tie adjacent ends together. All Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs installations must provide good continuous ground contact throughout. For further detail please Öffnet ein Fenster zum Versenden einer E-Mailcontact us.

The plants
Planting of Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs is easy and fast using our MP5 Armaflor™ VegPlugs . These plants have been grown in our special planting substrate, which enables them to lock into the planting holes upon planting time immediately. There is no danger of soil washing out.

Limitations
Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs extend the use of vegetation for erosion control along shores and streambanks. However many sites are unsuitable for the use of Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls/Coir Logs due to their inability to support plant life. Excessive stream flow velocity, ongoing disturbance, deep shade, water chemistry or high wave energy are examples of such growth limiting factors. Where hydrology and water quality are poorly understood or inadequate to support emergent aquatic vegetation, other methods must be selected. Other BGS products may offer appropriate alternatives.

Planted Log

Type ROWA

Utility
Armaflor™ Planted-Logs are Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls which have been pre-planted in our nursery with wetland vegetation. They substitute for Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls where an immediate impact is desired. Constructors choose Armaflor™ Planted-Logs over Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls to cut installation costs and to minimize planting guarantee claims. Armaflor™ Planted-Logs are used as construction and bioengineering elements for a variety of stream bank stabilization techniques along lake shores and on streams (see below). They are strong, yet flexible and easy to install. Over time as plants mature their root mass replaces the gradual loss of the biologically degrading Fibre filling. The resulting embankments are secure and indistinguishable from nature embankments. Plant roots filter fines from the water column. They also securely anchor Armaflor™ Planted-Logs to the substrate. Armaflor™ Planted-Logs must be selected according to the specific environmental conditions. Streams require different plants than lakes for example.

Quality
Armaflor™ Planted-Logs have been inspected prior to delivery.

The filling
Armaflor™ Planted-Logs are made of tough natural coir Fibres (coir = processed coconut husk Fibres), tightly stuffed into PP netting. Armaflor™ Planted-Logs are stuffed to a density of 7-8 kg/m or 7-9 pounds per cubic foot (Type VF300/FR 12"). An average person standing on a Armaflor™ Planted-Log should hardly make a dent in it.

The netting
The filling is encased by an environmentally inert PP netting. PP netting is resistant to damage by UV-light, frost and chemicals. Our netting is strong enough to allow Armaflor™ Planted-Logs to be handled by hooks attached to power equipment.

Installation
Armaflor™ Planted-Logs are typically installed with the aid of wooden stakes (recommended length is 0,8 - 1m / 46 to 48 inch) along stream banks and lake shores. Stakes should be placed no further then 24'' apart. Other then stakes, we have used earth anchors or riprap stone to hold Armaflor™ Planted-Logs in place. Armaflor™ Planted-Logs should be tightly connected to one another. Manually tie adjacent ends together. All installations of Armaflor™ Planted-Logs must provide good continuous ground contact throughout. Due to their great weight of approx. 35-45 kg/pc or 80-100 pounds/pc, we strongly recommend the use of power equipment during installation.
For further detail please contact us.

The plants
Mimicking natural embankments Armaflor™ Planted-Logs feature a mix of species that are commonly found together under natural conditions. The plants have been grown at a density of approx. 7-8 kg/m or 7-9 pounds per cubic foot (VF300/FR 12"), and are well rooted at the time of sale. Our planting system relies solely on soil-less planting media, so that there is no danger of soil washing out at the project site. For a current list of species mixes available please refer to our region nursery for information.

Typical uses
On stream banks Armaflor™ Planted-Logs are used to secure the toe of bank against erosion from water currents. They are flexible enough to adapt to stream bottoms and to follow the contours of the embankment. Pond and lake shores, often in urban parks, can be fitted with Armaflor™ Planted-Logs directly into the undercut embankment. They offer immediate visual impact and shorten the time of plant establishment. Armaflor™ Planted-Logs offer a unique opportunity to limit disturbance on sensitive sites to a one-time event. Where time of completion is of the essence, they provide significantly faster plant establishment and instant site protection.

Limitations
Armaflor™ Planted-Logs extend the use of vegetation for erosion control along shores and stream banks. However many sites are unsuitable for the use of Armaflor™ Planted-Logs due to their inability to support plant life. (e.g. AquaGreen™ Felix Wetland Raft)

Wetland Rollsod / Fibre Blanket

Wetland Rollsod Type RM/VM

Utility
Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod are nursery grown wetland sod ready for installation at the project site. They are standardized modules used for stabilization techniques along lake shores, in ponds, and along streams Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod are light in weight, flexible, and made of erosion resistant biodegradable geo-textile which has been preplanted in the nursery with wetland vegetation. Our special planting medium also aids in protecting plants from foraging predators, which may eat the foliage but will leave the rhizomes and roots alone. Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod protect the underlying soils from erosion and filter fines from the water column. Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod are designed for immediate impact, ready to go. They provide vegetative cover instantaneously!

Quality
Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod have been inspected prior to delivery.

The Planting Medium
Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsods (type RM/VM) are hydroponically grown plants in a blanket-shaped felt made of tough natural coir Fibres (coir = processed coconut husk Fibres). The Fibre felt is encased in a natural coir netting. This netting may be visible at the time of purchase. Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod are structurally firm and yet still light enough to be carried and installed by manual labor. For special sizes and applications the RM-type with an additional pp-netting will be available.

The plants
As indicated by their name, our Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod are slabs of fully developed wetland vegetation. Growing sods in nurseries hydroponically reduces typical transplanting shock to a minimum. Because of this system we are able to supply sods at any time of year (exceptions are deep freezes which might hinder harvest and transport). Each Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod has been planted with a selection of either wet meadow or marshland plant species. For an up-to-date list of plant species please refer to your local licensed nursery and our BGS-partners for information. Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod selection must be made according to site specific environmental conditions. Streams, lakes and salt marshes require different plant communities. Most important about the quality of a Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod is the root and rhizome mass inside and at the underside of the planting medium. A well developed root systems marks the quality of our Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod.

Installation
Installation procedures differ with the application. For energy rich environments we recommend the use of Best-Twine™ or plain non-galvanized iron wire. Drive wooden pegs (50 cm / 20 inch minimum) every 50-60 cm / 2 feet through perimeter of each Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod. String twine or wire between stakes tightly. Drive strings further to achieve good soil contact between Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod and underlying substrate. On stream-banks allow 10 cm / 4 inches of overlap in direction of flow for problem free installation. On soft surfaces (mud etc.) other methods of installation may apply, such as the use of stone or gravel ballast to weigh Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod. Watering may be required for a limited time. For further detail please contact us.

Typical uses
Wetland Rollsods™ are typically used along streambanks, in wetland swales or in shallow marshes where occasional storm flows threaten to erode existing soils. Particularly impressive results have been achieved with Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod on freshly filled and graded streambanks subject to sudden surges in stream flow volume and velocity due to impervious surfaces upstream. Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod enable us to establish marsh vegetation quickly at almost any time of year. It's fully developed vegetation makes Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod ideal for situations where instant cover and visual impact are required.

Limitations
Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod, like all other nursery products are subject to environmental influences beyond our control once they leave the nursery. We will guarantee success for all suitable sites, provided the product was handled and installed right. However many sites are unsuitable for the use of Armaflor™ Wetland Rollsod due to their inability to support plant life.

Fibre Blankets Type RG

Utility
Armaflor™ Vegetated Fibre-blankets are high quality erosion control fabrics, pre-planted (or planted after installation on the unplanted blanket) with wetland plant species, fully permeated with plant roots. Sold in rolls these blankets are light enough to be carried by two person. Yet their length (5m / 17 foot) and width 1m / (3,28 feet) gives wide cover. This makes it possible to keep costs for labor and materials at a minimum Armaflor™ Vegetated Fibre-blankets are used on stream-banks where structurally strong materials are needed. They are often used in combination with Armaflor™ Fibre-rolls. As plants mature their roots replace the slowly degrading blanket and provide erosion control of their own. Armaflor™ Vegetated Fibre-blankets can be used with different plant species. Care must be taken to make sure that the selected plant species be appropriate for the project site. Streams, lakes and salt marshes require different plants. Armaflor™ Vegetated Fibre-blankets are fully biodegradable. This makes them uniquely suited for applications near the waters edge, where the combination of structural integrity and biodegradability is a highly desirable asset.

Quality
Armaflor™ Vegetated Fibre-blankets have been inspected prior to delivery.

The Fibre
Armaflor™ Vegetated Fibre-blankets are made of tough natural coir Fibres (coir = processed coconut husk Fibres) and different wetland plant species. The Fibres are spun into yarns. The yarns are woven into blankets of different mesh size. Contrary to other natural Fibres, coir bristles and coils, so that each yarn is surrounded by a shroud of little bristly Fibres. These bristly Fibres are a mark of quality. They help anchor the fabric on the ground as well as protect the surface from erosion.

Installation
As indicated in the margins various Armaflor™ Vegetated Fibre-blankets applications may require different installation procedures. All Armaflor™ Vegetated Fibre-blankets installations must provide good soil contact throughout. We recommend the use of 3 wooden pegs (30cm / 12 to 18 inches long and notched at their tops) per square yard for installation. Install multiple lanes of Armaflor™ Vegetated Fibre-blankets with generous overlaps in the direction of expected water flow. Secure seams with extra stakes. Key top and bottom of installation into existing soils carefully. For further detail please contact us.

The plants
Consult with a knowledgeable professional about plants suitable for your project location. Larger trees and shrubs are best planted prior to the fabric installation. Follow accepted horticultural guide lines for plants.

Typical uses
On streambanks Armaflor™ Vegetated Fibre-blankets are used to secure the bank against erosion from water currents. They protect soils above Armaflor™ Vegetated Fibre-blankets from scour during storm events, thereby preventing costly damage, losses, and down stream sedimentation. Pond and lake shores, are sometimes gentle enough to be sufficiently protected by a row or two of Armaflor™ Vegetated Fibre-blankets also have a use in the construction of breakwater.

Limitations
Armaflor™ Vegetated Fibre-blankets extend the use of vegetation for erosion control along shores, streambanks and upland slopes. However many sites are unsuitable for the use Armaflor™ Vegetated Fibre-blankets. Excessive stream flow velocity, ongoing disturbance, deep shade, water chemistry or high wave energy are examples of such growth limiting factors. Where hydrology and erosion causing agents are adverse to plant growth and or are poorly understood, other methods may be considered. Other BESTMANN GREEN SYSTEMS products may offer appropriate alternatives.

BesTex®

Fibre Webbing®

Utility
BesTex™ Fibre-Webbing are high quality erosion control fabrics. Sold in rolls these blankets are light enough to be carried by one person. Yet their length (25m/50m - 82/164 feet) and width (1m/2m - 3,28/6,5 feet) gives wide cover. This makes it possible to keep costs for labor and materials at a minimum. BesTex™ Fibre-Webbing are used on upland slopes and stream-banks where structurally strong materials are needed. They are often used in combination with Armaflor™ Fibre-Rolls. In the short term they are good substitutes for plant cover; in the long term, they need to be replaced by plants. As plants mature their roots replace the slowly degrading blanket and provide erosion control of their own. BesTex™ Fibre-Webbing can be used with plants or seeds. Care must be taken to make sure that the selected plant species be appropriate for the project site. Streams, lakes and salt marshes require different plants. BesTex™ Fibre-Webbing are fully biodegradable. This makes them uniquely suited for applications near the waters edge, where the combination of structural integrity and biodegradability is a highly desirable asset.

Quality
BesTex™ Fibre-Webbing have been inspected prior to delivery.

The Fibre
BesTex™ Fibre-Webbing are made of tough natural coir Fibres (coir = processed coconut husk Fibres). These Fibres are spun into yarns.

Planting and seeding
BesTex™ Fibre-Webbing can be planted or seeded. Quart size plants or smaller can be planted through the mesh simply by sliding the strands of the mesh apart. Use small Aramaflor™ Plant-Plugs to plant into the mesh. Simply open up the mesh with a planting dibble and insert plant. Both types of BesTex™ Fibre-Webbing can be seeded with standard or custom seed mixes. For best results apply seed before laying fabric.

Installation
As indicated in the margins various BesTex™ Fibre-Webbing applications may require different installation procedures. All BesTex™ Fibre-Blanket installations must provide good soil contact throughout. We recommend the use of 3 wooden pegs (30cm to 40 cm - 12 to 18 inches long and notched at their tops) per square yard for installation. Install multiple lanes of BesTex™ Fibre-Webbing with generous overlaps in the direction of expected water flow. Secure seams with extra stakes. Key top and bottom of installation into existing soils carefully. For further detail please contact us.

Fibre Mat (FM/RFM)

General Use
With BesTex™ Fibre Mats a mature stand of wetland vegetation can be rapidly established on shorelines, streambanks, tidal areas, swales, detention basins, or created wetlands. The immediate full coverage of leaves, stems, and roots offered by these products is often needed to control moderate or to high levels of erosion from waves and currents. In other cases, they are chosen for their ability to prosper with minimal post-installation maintenance, to suppress invasive weeds, and to rapidly meet replication standards or look attractive. Vegetation soon supports many additional organisms which perform water quality and habitat functions. BesTex™ Fibre Mats are available in mixed species compositions suited for common applications, or as well in an unvegetated version (see pictures below).

Advantages
BesTex™ Fibre Mats are produced in a nursery setting where it is most economical to tend plants during vulnerable early growth. The mature stands of vegetation are easy to transport and handle and quick to install year 'round without special equipment or skills. They are lightweight to carry and ship, but do not float, and have desirable moisture and nutrient retention properties. Upon installation, the combination of durable, biodegradable coir fibre substrate and mature roots and topgrowth provides secure attachment and protection against scour. Sedimentation processes deposit mineral and organic particles around roots to provide an ideal medium for stable growth and expansion. BesTex™ Fibre Mats Type RFM are machine made, in contrast to BesTex™ Fibre Mats Type FM which are handmade from coconut fibre. The fibres of machine made BesTex™ Fibre Mats Type RFM are evenly distributed which leads to a better area filter effect

Quality
BesTex™ Fibre Mats have been inspected prior to delivery.

Limitations
BesTex™ Fibre Mats may be effectively installed where stream velocities are 2 feet per second or less, or where wave heights are below 1 foot, and slopes are = 1:5. For further detail please contact us.
